Nafisa (15) lives in a traditional cotton-growing village in Sudan. It’s the summer holidays and she has to help her friends
with her grandmother’s cotton harvest. She’s also in love for the first time.
Her grandmother Al-Sit, the respected matriarch, holds the village firmly in her grasp and passes on her knowledge to
Nafisa. The arrival of Nadir, a young Sudanese businessman from abroad, threatens to shake up life
in the village with new technologies in cotton farming. Nafisa’s parents sense an opportunity to marry their daughter to
Nadir and thus increase the family’s wealth. But the final say over Nafisa’s future – whether she
will be circumcised and whom she is allowed to marry – rests with Al-Sit. Torn between her family’s demands and her
desire for independence, Nafisa must find her own path between tradition and modernity.
