SORRY FOR THE GENOCIDE is a documentary journey through the shared history of Namibia and Germany — a history that continues to resonate to this day. Between 1904 and 1908, German colonial troops killed up to 100,000 people in what is now Namibia, in a crime widely recognized as the first genocide of the 20th century. More than a century later, Germany seeks to officially acknowledge this genocide and apologize through the “Joint Declaration”. Yet the agreement has not been met with unanimous support: the descendants of the Ovaherero and Nama peoples, who were directly affected, feel excluded and they continue to demand justice and participation in decisions concerning their history.

With Theodora Shandé & Matteo Sant’Unione in attendance

followed by a workshop at the cinema

25.06.2026, 11:30–14:00 h (2,5 h Workshop with a break)

Following the screening of SORRY FOR THE GENOCIDE, director Theodora Shandé will lead an in-depth workshop. Through a short quiz and guided discussion, participants will explore key questions raised by the film: How can cinema become a form of resistance? How do we remember when history has been silenced? And what does it mean to discover that this history is also part of German history? Together, we will discuss why this knowledge matters in times of racism, far-right violence, and ongoing colonial legacies.
